3. STENCILS, INSIGNIA AND PART MARKING 模板、记号和零件标记

A. General

通用

(1) Keep the work area free of dust and large temperature changes. Keep the temperature 40-100°F (50-95°F is recommended). Keep the relative humidity 20-90% (30-80% is recommended).

NOTE: Water base latex paints can be applied at higher humidities than other water base paints. Epoxy, polyurethane, and silicone paints require atmospheric moisture to cure, and could require application at a minimum humidity of 40%. Lacquers with fast solvents require humidities below 60%.

(2) All components of the coatings must be smooth and have no gelled particles. If there is separation of ingredients, they must be mixed together again.

(3) Do not apply chemical and solvent resistant finishes over finishes that are not chemical and solvent resistant, unless the overhaul instructions are different. Be careful not to contaminate new chemical and solvent resistant finishes with organic coatings (such as zinc chromate primer) by overspray or other causes.

(4) When you apply insignia and large stencil markings, if the blue lacquer shows through the white lacquer, you can apply the white lacquer first.

(5) Stencils

(a) Metal stencils are recommended for character sizes smaller than 1/4 inch, and for graphics and insignia. Engrave or etch the metal to make the stencils. Use metal no thicker than the minimum width of the thinnest line of the markings.

(b) Cardboard or metal stencils backed with adhesive are recommended for character sizes larger than 1/4 inch. Make sure the cuts are sharp and have no burrs.

(6) Part Marking

(a) Be sure to replace the part mark on a part if it was erased or cannot be read. You can use a temporary mark until the overhaul procedure lets you apply the permanent mark.

B. Surface Preparation

G. Quality Control

(1) The markings must be sharp and clear, with smooth, continuous color.

B. Surface Preparation

C. Materials Preparation

(c) It is usually not necessary to thin or retard these materials. If required, add only small amounts of thinner, and then only after the mixture waited the time given in step (a) above. Use a retardant only if the material dries too quickly.

With Enthone series M, use MIL-T-81772, Type II, or equal parts of xylene and toluene, for the thinner. No retardant is necessary.

(a) These materials are supplied in viscosities good for the silk screen procedure. If you must thin these materials, use the minimum solvent possible. These solvents are preferred:

(b) Mix the material first, without thinner, until it is smooth, or put it on a paint shaker for 10-15 minutes. Add thinner as required and then mix again. Then let the material stand until air bubbles are removed. As an option, you can use vacuum to remove the air bubbles.

(1) Put under the stencil the surface to be screened. Adjust the distance between the screen and the surface to supply the correct amount of ink. This is important with the catalyzed or lower-viscosity inks. If the surface is cloth, it must be stretched tight until after the cure is complete.

(2) Use a hard rubber (60-80 durometer) squeegee with a sharp edge. Add ink to the screen and make the print. A fill pass followed by a contact pass is recommended but optional.

(a) The cure does not require oxygen to soak into the coating. The parts can be touched after the solvent has evaporated. See Table 3 for applicable air dry times.

F. Indicia Panels

(1) Mix 8 parts VF112, 4-5 parts VF111, and 7.5 ml 3920 clear for each pint of ink.

(2) Mix 3920 clear gloss or 3930 clear flat coating with aluminum leaf as follows:

(1) The completed marking must have no dirt or other unwanted material. All details of the design must be sharp and clear.

A. Make sure the surface to be marked is clean and dry, and has no defects which could make the marks be not easy to read.

B. Make the steel stamp marks with single-character stamps or multiple character holders and a suitable hammer or part-marking press. If the character size is not given, use the largest practical size.

If the overhaul instructions do not give the character type or size, use 12-16 point (0.12-0.17-inch) Gothic characters. During the procedure, clean the stamp face with an applicable solvent to make sure the stamp continues to print correctly.

(1) If the overhaul instructions require the marks to be resistant to abrasion, fuel, hydraulic fluid, or other problems, give the marks the protection of an overcoat. If the overhaul instructions do not give the overcoat name, make the selection from Table 5.

8. ELECTROCHEMICAL ETCH MARKING (CODE E) 电化学蚀刻标记(代码E)

A. Electrochemical etch marking makes a permanent mark on metals in a few seconds. Electric current goes through a pad wet with conductive solution that touches the part through a nonconductive stencil. Other names for this method are electrochemical etch, electrolytic etch, electrochemical mark, and Lectroetch.

B. Surface Preparation

(1) Unless the overhaul instructions are different, apply the marks before you apply finishes to the surface. Mark directly on chemically-treated surfaces such as those with alodine, chromate, or phosphate treatment. Remove anodized coating from the area per SOPM 20-30-02 before you apply the marks.

(1) Use this procedure only for marks 0.0002-0.0005 inch deep. If the overhaul instructions specify a deeper mark, use the Deep Etch procedure of Paragraph 8.D. below.

(2) For the surface, make a selection of electrolyte and cleaner from Figure 2 unless the overhaul instructions are different.

(4) Attach the felt pad to the applicator.

(9) Put the stencil on the surface to be marked. Attach it or firmly hold it against the surface.

(10) With the power on, put the wet pad against the stencil for the time necessary to make a good mark. If the equipment supplies more than 20 volts dc, remove the pad after 3 seconds maximum. On curved surfaces, roll the felt pad across the stencil. Try the procedure on scrap pieces first, to find the correct current and time adjustments for a good mark.

Remove the parts and let them drain. Wipe them dry or let them air dry. Put the parts in machine oil for 3 minutes minimum. Remove the parts and let them drain. Remove excess oil with clean wipers.

D. Deep Etch Marking

(1) Use this procedure only if the overhaul instructions specify electrochemical etch marks 0.001 inch or deeper.

(2) For the power source, the indicated units are recommended. Other units can be used if the results will be the same.

D. Make sure the marks do not put distortions in the material or damage the surface on the other side.

11. VIBROENGRAVING (CODE VE) 振动雕刻(代码VE)

A. Use an electric or air driven vibratory tool (vibrating pencil, vibropeen, vibroetch) or engrave with a ball end mill or rotary burr tool. Do not use a rotary burr tool on steel parts 180 ksi or above.

A. Label location (in order of preference):

C. Mark by one of these methods:

E. Special instructions for bar code labels on Avionics components

(1) The data on the unit’s nameplate identifies the unit. Bar code labels give a second source of identification that a machine can read, but the data on the bar code labels must agree with the data on the nameplate.

(2) Four different bar code labels are usually applied to each unit (Figure 4):

(4) If labels are defective or missing, you can locally make replacement labels, or send the unit back to Boeing for label replacement. If you cannot read the old label, use the data on the nameplate of the unit.

(5) To make the labels

(a) Load the ink ribbon and label stock into the printer. Use the ribbon and labels of the same vendor. Do not mix items of different vendors.

(b) If the overhaul instructions do not give the label size, use the smallest size possible.

如果大修说明没有给出标签尺寸,请使用尽可能小的尺寸。

(c) Print the label. The dimensions shown in Figure 4 will let you fit the data on the 0.5 by 1.25-inch and 0.25 by 2.00-inch labels.

(d) Periodically verify the quality of the label to make sure the data can be read and is correct. Refer to ANSI X3.182-1990 (as revised) for print quality specifications. Labels printed too cool or too hot could have readability problems.

(e) Install the label the same as a BAC5312, Type F marker (SOPM 20-50-05).
