2. DEFINITIONS 定义
A. Application time: The length of time after two-part sealants are mixed, or after premixed frozen sealant is thawed, during which the sealant can be applied and smoothed. The end of application time is when the sealant flow rate is less than 30 grams in a minute when pushed out at 90 psi through an opening that is approximately 1/8 inch (3 mm) in diameter (such as a Semco Model 440 nozzle) at standard test conditions. Application time will be different at other temperatures and humidities.

E. Injection kit: A sealant kit in which the base compound is stored in a plastic cartridge and the accelerator is stored in a tubular dasher rod with a piston rod and valve. If quick-frozen, refrigerated storage of activated sealant is 28 days maximum at -40°F (-40°C) or colder. All refrigerated material must be packaged in sealed tubes.

E. Quick Rework Materials

(1) When a fast cure time is important, you can use PR-1826 or PR-1828 sealants. They have these properties at 72-82°F (22-28°C) and 45-55% relative humidity:

(5) PR-1828 sealant will bond to most surfaces. But on clad aluminum, you can get a better bond if you first use Scotch-Brite to make the surface rough and not shiny.

(6) Shelf life of PR-1826 and PR-1828 sealants is 6 months at 35-80°F (2-27°). Do not freeze these sealants.

F. PR-2001 Sealant

5. SURFACE PREPARATION 表面准备
A. Use clean wipers and the applicable solvent to remove all grease, oil, dirt and unwanted matter from the surfaces that will have sealant applied to them. Vacuuming or compressed air can also be used but vacuuming is preferred to compressed air to prevent the spread of contamination to other areas. On or near acrylic surfaces, use only aliphatic naphtha, to prevent crazing. On other surfaces, use BMS 11-7, Citra-Safe, methyl ethyl ketone, methyl propyl ketone, or the MPK-sec-Butyl mix, or FCC-55. Do not use too much cleaner. Do not let the cleaner dry on the surface.

B. Dry the surfaces with clean wipers. Clean the surfaces again until the wipers stay clean and the surface is visually clean. Make sure you include the slots and the recesses.

C. On surfaces to get Dow Corning 93-006 sealant, apply Dow Corning PR-1200 primer first. Apply a thin layer of the primer with a brush or a clean wiper. Let the primer dry a minimum of 60 minutes before you apply the sealant. If the primer becomes dirty or the sealant is not applied in 24 hours, remove the primer from the surface as specified by Paragraph 5.A. and Paragraph 5.B. Then apply a new layer of the primer.

Let the primer dry a minimum of 30 minutes before you apply the sealant. If the primer becomes dirty or the sealant is not applied in 24 hours, remove the primer from the surface as specified by Paragraph 5.A. and Paragraph 5.B. Then apply a new layer of the primer.

6. SEALANT PREPARATION 密封胶准备
A. Mix the base compound with matched activator (identified with the same batch number as on the base compound). Use the vendor’s recommended proportions and procedures. Be careful not to mix air into the mixture. Mix the sealant until the color is smooth.

B. Equipment used to mix silicone sealants must not be used to mix non-silicone compounds, because the silicone cannot be completely cleaned from the equipment, and because silicone can cause problems with the bonds of the non-silicone materials. Be sure to identify such equipment.

7. APPLICATION 应用
CAUTION :DO NOT APPLY BMS 5-45 OR BMS 5-95 OR BMS 5-142 SEALANT OVER ZINC CHROMATE OR BMS 10-11, TYPE 1 PRIMERS UNTIL THE PRIMER DRIES A MINIMUM OF 6 HOURS AT ROOM TEMPERATURE.

A. The applied sealant can be made smooth before it cures (wet method) or after it cures (dry method). If you use the wet method, use masking tape as necessary to give protection to adjacent panel skins and recesses. The mask is not necessary around recessed fastener heads.

B. If slot width A and slot depth B are in the ranges shown in Figure 1, apply sealant as follows. If not, go to Paragraph 7.C.

(1) Install one panel.

(2) Put the second panel in position and drill all holes for fasteners. Complete all drilling and reaming operations.

(3) Loosen the panel and clean it as specified in Paragraph 5.

(5) Apply sealant with an extrusion gun, a paper cone, or a spatula. A gun tip with a minimum width of 0.030 inch (0.762 mm) is recommended. If the depth of the slot is more than 0.250 inch (6.35 mm), use a tip that can go into the slot to let you fill the slot from the bottom. Make sure you completely fill the slots and recesses to prevent hidden gaps and air pockets. Apply a small quantity more to make allowance for shrinkage and the sealant finishing procedures of Paragraph 8.

C. If slot width A is less than 0.020 inch (5.08 mm), or if slot depth B is more than the limit specified, apply sealant as follows:

(1) Install one panel.

A small quantity of sealant can come out from the slot or recess between the panels. But be careful to keep the sealant away from the faying surfaces of the panel and the structure.

(5) If the joint is offset, do not apply sealant if the depth of the offset is less than 0.020 inch (5.08 mm) (Figure 1), because the fillet cannot be formed satisfactorily.

8. FINISHING 表面处理
A. Method 1 — Dry Method (Trim and buff after the sealant cures) (Figure 2).

(3) Do the rough trim and sealant removal with an approved sealant removal tool as specified in SOPM 20-50-19. Be very careful not to damage metal surfaces. On exterior clad aluminum fuselage skin panels and aluminum splice plates, scribe marks near lap and butt joints could start fatigue cracks.

(4) If necessary, make the sealant smooth with a rubber block or wheel that has an ASTM D2240 Type A durometer hardness of 30-60. For example, you can use a gum rubber buffing wheel such as Boeing ST4359HW on an air motor or other rotary power tool to buff the sealant to flushness.

(a) When composite parts are sanded for surface preparation, you can remove unwanted sealant as part of the sanding operation.

(b) For sealants that contain chromates, apply a good quantity of water mist to the cured sealant and the rubber wheel before and during the buffing operations. After buffing, remove wetted dust before it dries or contaminates adjacent surfaces. Use a wiper wet with water or solvent. As an alternative, you can use dry buffing if you use personal protection such as a full-face respirator and protective clothing, and do the task in an approved dust booth.

B. Method 2 — Wet Method (before the sealant cures) (Figure 2).

(1) Mask the skins adjacent to the slots and gaps before you apply sealant. It is not necessary to mask around recessed fastener heads. Put the masking tape approximately 0.05 inch (1.2 mm) from the edge of the slot. If the masking tape is too far from the edge of the slot, the sealant will overlap the skin surface and removal of this sealant overlap will be necessary before finish.

(1) When you apply the sealant, include a small quantity as a bead above the adjacent surfaces.

(3) Before the finishing solution evaporates, remove the bead with a non-metal scraper at a 30-50 degree angle, as shown. Be sure to do this before the sealant dries or cures, because then the scraper could pull the remaining sealant out of its channel and make the seal unserviceable.

D. Method 4 — Wet Finish Method for PR-2001 Sealant (Figure 2)

(1) Put masking tape approximately 0.05 inch (1.2 mm) from the edge of slots or gaps.

(3) Remove unwanted sealant within its application time. Pull a scraper along the slot, with the scraper at an angle of 80-90 degrees from the surface. Do not hold the scraper at an angle more than 90 degrees. With the scraper at the specified angle, only a minimum of sealant will be pulled from the slot, and the remaining sealant will be less concave after the cure.

(4) For slots with titanium foil installed (such as 787 fuselage circumferential joins), apply masking tape approximately 0.05 inch (1.2 mm) from the edge of the slot and the edge of the foil. Use sufficient pressure to wipe the top edge of the titanium foil clean. For butt joints where the titanium foil does not wrap onto the outer surface, scrape the unwanted sealant with sufficient pressure until you can see the edge of the masking tape adjacent to the slot. But do not push the scraper too hard, or you could damage the foil.

E. Method 5 — Application of PR-2001 sealant to Fastener Drive Recesses (Figure 2)

(1) Clean the surface of the fastener and the adjacent area as specified in Paragraph 5.

(c) Let the PR-187 or PR-188 adhesion promoter dry for 30 minutes before you apply the PR-2001, Class B-2 sealant.

(3) Fill the fastener drive recess with PR-2001, Class B-2 sealant with a 1/8 inch (3 mm) or smaller injection nozzle. Inject the sealant directly into the bottom of the recess to help prevent caught air pockets.

F. Method 6 — Installation of Metal Foil Composite Edge Protection with PR-2001 Sealant (Figure 2)

NOTE: The overhaul instructions will specify when to install metal foil for composite edge protection. The configuration of the metal foil and the composite edge can be different for different applications.

(1) Clean the composite edges as specified in Paragraph 5. for a distance of approximately 0.2 inch (5 mm) out from the area to get the foil.

You can use Boeing standard tool ST982SB sealant spreaders to apply the sealant on forward facing edges of 787 fuselage sections. The thickness of the applied sealant (approximately 0.005-0.009 inch or 0.127-0.229 mm) must be sufficient to give continuous squeeze-out between the composite edge and the metal foil.

(d) Within the application time of the sealant, put the metal foil on the composite edge and tightly push the foil into position by hand or with a tool such as a roller. Refer to the overhaul instructions for the length, number and position of the metal foil segments.

(e) Connect the metal foil segments as specified by the overhaul instructions. Put a minimum overlap of 0.25 inch (6.4 mm) in the ends of adjacent foil pieces. Then apply PR-2001 Class B-2 sealant to the areas of overlap.

(f) Within the application life of the sealant, hold the foil in position with tape, tightly stretched around the foil along the length of the composite edge, or use an equivalent procedure. Do not put tape on the end of the metal foil if another metal foil will be installed above it as shown in Figure 2. To prevent a bond between the tape and the foil, you can put a clear strip of plastic (such as polyethylene) in the center of the tape or on the metal foil. Use a tape that does not contain silicone adhesive, and that will not contaminate the surface with a residue or interfere with the sealant cure. For flat metal foil installations (Figure 3), PR-2001 sealant squeeze-out (made within its application life) can be made smooth on the foil surface or primed composite edge that is perpendicular to the outside mold line if you can see some of the foil.

(4) Remove the tape after the sealant is cured sufficiently to prevent movement of the metal foil. PR-2001 Class B-2 sealant will cure after approximately 8 hours at standard test conditions. The cure will be slower at colder temperatures and faster at warmer temperatures.

(5) After removal of the tape, make sure you can see that the external sealant squeeze-out between the composite surface and the foil is continuous.

(6) Remove sealant squeeze-out from external surfaces and metal foil with a plastic tool or a wooden tool, such as a scraper. You can use wipers to remove unwanted sealant. For flat metal foil, PR-2001 sealant squeeze-out that is worked within its application time and smoothed on the foil can stay on the metal, if you can see some of the foil.

(7) The sealant must fill the faying surface to the edge of the metal foil. The metal foil and its edges must be tightly bonded to the surface.

9. REPAIR 修理
A. General

(1) Remove all of the bad sealant with approved sealant removal tools (SOPM 20-50-19).

(4) If necessary for a better appearance, you can make the sealant surface smoother with finishing solution (Paragraph 3.D.(10)).

(5) For small repairs, no subsequent work is necessary if you make the sealant smooth during application. For other repairs, use the procedures of Paragraph 8.

C. Repair of Metal Foil Composite Edge Protection (Figure 3)

(1) Repair of the metal foil applied to the composite edge is different by the type of metal foil applied. The foil could be applied to a chamfer, to a 90-degree corner, or flat to a vertical edge, as shown.

(2) For protection of composite edges of 787 fuselage structure:

(4) When foil replacement is specified in Table 1 or Table 2, remove and replace damaged foil or all of the foil segment as follows:

(a) Remove sealant as necessary to get access to the foil. Be careful not to damage the structure or the foil that will stay on the structure.

(d) Cut or tear the foil off on each side of the damaged area. Do not cut the foil with the structure directly below it. You can use Boeing standard tool ST201J-series shears to cut the foil applied to the forward facing edge of the 787 circumferential joint.

(a) Unless the overhaul instructions are different, the finished sealant must be approximately flush with adjacent external surfaces. The sealant must not extend above adjacent surfaces. The sealant can be slightly concave compared to the adjacent surfaces.

(b) The applied sealant must be continuous, with no voids, holes, bubbles or cracks, no defects such as tool marks, unwanted material such as embedded metal chips, and no defects in the surface of the sealant.
涂覆的密封胶必须连续,不得有空隙、孔洞、气泡或裂缝,不得有工具痕迹等缺陷,不得有嵌入金属屑等不需要的材料,且密封胶表面不得有缺陷。
(c) Use only the specified sealants.

(d) Metal foil applied to the part must have no wrinkles, dents, tears or other defects.

(e) For 90-degree and chamfered metal foil installations, sealant squeeze-out must be removed from the part and foil surfaces.
